SCANBUY sounds useful, but my phone doesn't support it (LG). GPShopper's Slifter application (www.slifter.com) on the other hand runs fine and I have a non-GSM carrier (Sprint)

Rob, GPShopper www.gpshopper.com also works via text also and gives you local product results. Just text the name of your product and your zip code to 95173. (I tried "Ipod nano 10017"). I agree with Punit, the fact that it includes local product results, as verse just online ones give it an edge over other comparison apps I have tried.

GPS Shopper seems neat. The concept has been floating around for quite some time. Having a solution that provides both online and local offers to the user will definitely pick up.

Coming to barcodes and comparison shopping for mobile devices, SCANBUY has launched the first version of SCANBUY Shopper service recently. For more information: http://www.scanbuyshopper.com . Its a Java application that should work on most of the phones in the U.S. Only GSM carriers have been added in the supported list as of yet. You can download the application on your mobile device by visiting http://wap.scanbuy.com

There's a mobile image recognition service through a company called Neven Vision which might be worth paying attention to. Comparison shopping isn't their focus, but could be one application of the service.

I would also like to point out a UK based SMS Price Comparison service called text4price (http://www.text4price.com) which is similar to some of the services mentioned above. The searches can be either SKU or Natural Language, and the website offers a free price comparison service if you are near to a computer. Whilst the features text4price are currently offering is limited compared to more established price comparison engines their portfolio is growing extremely quickly. Well worth a look and play !
