FanimeCon & Vloggercon

Jeff Clavier had a timely post this weekend about venturing outside your normal conference tour. I’d highly recommend this as I attended FanimeCon at the end of May and Vloggercon this weekend.

Ok, before you peg me as a complete freak for checking out FanimeCon, my brother just joined a company in the space, so I really wanted to understand what he was getting himself into. While the conference was a bit odd from my perspective – I still don’t understand the fascination with cat ears – it’s interesting to talk with the MySpace generation.

As for Vloggercon and vlogging, there are a lot of passionate people trying to shape the nascent industry. For the uninitiated, a vlog is a video weblog…so just imagine seeing my mug and hearing my voice everytime I posted. Rocketboom is the most popular vlog with about 300,000 views a day (not sure about unique views). 88Slide is another clever vlog run by Noah Bonnett who was picked as one of LAist’s 20 under 30. Om Malick thinks 88Slide will be the next Rocketboom, so it’s not just me who is a cheerleader for the company.

Vloggercon was attended by 300+ fanatics. I haven’t seen so much excitement from conference attendees for a long time. Michelle Meyers from News.com was there taping and talking with everyone in sight. As opposed to re-creating the wheel, you should just read her report for the specifics.

Ok, now back to our regularly scheduled programming…
